Ever wondered where the raw ingredients for our canned food came from? With LIFESPANTREE, the source is part of our story.
Jayah anak Bohoi from Kampung Ensika (Sebuyau) has been producing 200 kampung chickens every four months, which LIFESPANTREE buys directly from him. The chicken goes into our canned Ayam Kampung Pansuh, a first ever in Malaysia.
Buying matured birds from our farmers is a LIFESPANTREE guarantee, giving them the security of income. In addition, they have the choice to sell both the chicken and eggs in markets and to other customers.
One of the things that make this possible are egg incubators, which at the present time allows Jayah to hatch 60 eggs per 21 days.
Commercially bought day-old chicks cost between RM2.00 to RM3.30 each, and this is before accounting for a mortality rate of 20%, which drives up the cost accordingly.
Eventually, the initiative will expand to four farmers with the aim of achieving 100 eggs in the hatchery. This will be made possible with the use of the GQF Egg Incubator and Hatcher Combo, which will increase the egg capacity from 60 to 300 per hatching period.
With this pilot project, Jayah will enjoy a significant increase in income. Along with that, this often invisible labour is called into recognition on our can labels.
LIFESPANTREE is an initiative by WHATMATTERS, producing food with a long shelf life for this community with fresh produce bought from rural B40 farmers. It was supported by Yayasan Hasanah Special Grant 2020 & 2022/MOF. Today, the pilot part of LIFESPANTREE is operating under a social enterprise grant from Yayasan Hasanah specifically to help increase the income stream for farmers.
Our Ayam Kampung Pansuh (and some other ready-to-eat food) is now available from Choice Premier and Emart. You can also order them from our Shopee store.
