Feeding a flock of 200 kampung chickens isn’t cheap. Commercial feed comes at a cost that creeps steadily upwards due to inflation. Quite the deterrent to any farmer wanting to raise livestock.
That’s where WHATMATTERS’s second initiative for rural B40 farmers come in. By clearing four plots of land at three acres each, farmers have space to raise crops for animal feed purposes. The crop includes corn, soybean, and groundnut.
The farmers will also be equipped with chicken feed pellet machines.
Commercial feed runs from RM3.00 to RM3.50/KG, whereas farmed feed will cost RM1.20/KG. A projection of target revenue for feed grains at two harvests is RM7,000 per year. This means four farmers could make a total of RM28,000 each per year.
The feed growing trial will commence next year from February to May, after the rainy season.
LIFESPANTREE is an initiative by WHATMATTERS, producing food with a long shelf life for this community with fresh produce bought from rural B40 farmers. It was supported by Yayasan Hasanah Special Grant 2020 & 2022/MOF. Today, the pilot part of LIFESPANTREE is operating under a social enterprise grant from Yayasan Hasanah specifically to help increase the income stream for farmers.
